Kawatiri Coastal Trail

The Kawatiri Coastal Trail is a cycling and walking heritage trail connecting the Buller District towns of Westport and Charleston.

Often called ‘New Zealand’s longest short ride’, thanks to the stunning mix of coastal views, native bush and ever-changing scenery packed into just 40km.

Learn, unearth and discover the incredible story of Kawatiri, and the past, present and future of this unique place. Explore themes of Triumph and Treasure – the taonga (treasures) of the earth (pounamu, coal, gold) and the bravery and innovation of human endeavour they inspired from the earliest Polynesian settlers to today.

Seal Colony at Tauranga Bay

The seal colony can be found just out of Westport on the edge of Tauranga Bay. The 10 -minute track from the car park is suitable for wheelchairs and leads to viewing platforms directly overlooking the colony. Although the seals are at home all year-round, the best time to view them is October to March when the BIG BULL SEALS return to mate and the pups are at their most playful.
